Government doctors allege that medicines had been procured under emergency medicines purchases at three-times the normal price.

Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) spokesman Dr .Chamil Wijesinghe said losses as a result last year alone amounted to millions of rupees.

He said 630 emergency purchases have been approved this year, with 67 medicines already imported had either been suspended or banned.

This will cause a much higher loss to the state than in 2023, said Dr. Wijesinghe.

He called for the effective enforcement of medicines regulatory act to prevent such wastages of public money.
