Arrested journalist Tharindu Uduwaragedara has been admitted to the accident ward of Colombo National Hospital.

He was taken into custody during a protest organized by trade unions in Borella yesterday (28).

According to the police media unit, Uduwaragedara faces charges of being a member of an illegal assembly and criminally intimidating a state official.

Meanwhile, the National Movement for a Just Society has called for an immediate investigation into the reported assault of the journalist during his arrest.

Its secretary Sunil Jayasekara said in a statement the incident showed the disrespect by certain parties to the right to freedom of expression.

It is unfortunate that relevant parties continue to ignore the guidelines issued to prevent such incidents, especially those given to the police by the Human Rights Commission on how to act during public protests, added the statement.
