A small boy, aged 3 ½ years, has died at Lady Ridgeway Hospital in Colombo after doctors removed both his kidneys by mistake.
Surgery had been intended to remove only the left kidney that had not functioned since his birth.
However, the right kidney too, had been removed during the operation.
Hamdi Fazlim from Kotahena had been hospitalized about a year ago following a sudden illness.
Doctors carried out tests and found his left kidney was not functioning and a surgery performed in December last year.
The boy had developed urination trouble thereafter and admitted to hospital once again.
Only then doctors found his right kidney too, was missing.
His life hinged on dialysis for months, but an infection took him for the last time to hospital, where he died two days ago.
