The candidate who gets the support of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will be the winner at the next presidential election, said government minister Prasanna Ranatunga.

He was speaking at a party meeting in Attanagalle on 22 July.

Ranatunga said his party will also form the next government, as it has revived following setbacks during the anti-government uprising last year.

Accusing the JVP of being a party with a killing culture, he said the SLPP had never committed murders, but had always worked for the country.

Ranatunga claimed that six of the persons who had set fire to his house during the uprising are dead today, punished by nature.

In the future, anyone found to be harassing SLPP supporters will have to pay, he said, adding that it could be accepted either as a threat or as an advice.

By September, the economy would strengthen further, and on the back of it, 2024 will be an election year, where the candidate with the SLPP’s backing will be the president, and the party will form the next government, he said.
