MP C.V. Vigneswaran has expressed fears that people of the Wanni would be adversely affected by a proposed sugarcane cultivation project there.

On a proposal by the president, 200 hectares of state-owned land in Vavuniya is to be given to a Thai company to build a sugar factory.

Vigneswaran, also a former chief minister of the northern province, said he had rejected a similar proposal to build a sugar factory in Wanni as it would yield more losses than profits.

The latest project would worsen the water problems already faced by the Wanni people, he told journalists in Jaffna on July 02.

According to media reports, president Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed the handover of 30,000 acres in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu for sugarcane cultivation.
