Lands and buildings with historical value will be preserved as national heritages, said chairman of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) Nimesh Herath.

Between 35 and 40 such sites have already been identified in Colombo and its suburbs, he said.

The historic value of such places should not be harmed when they are given to private investors for development on the long-term lease.

Herath was speaking at the opening of 80 Club at Independence Avenue, Colombo for public functions.

One of the oldest clubs in Colombo, it was taken over by the state in 2020 and refurbished by the Navy at a cost of Rs. 411 million.

It was reopened in 2021.
