The health sector could be in peril due to the retirement of 614 medical administrators and doctors at the end of this year, said the Health Ministry.

Fifteen administrators, seven deputy administrators, five deputy director generals, two additional secretaries, 250 specialist doctors and 340 doctors will leave the service upon the completion of 60 years of age.

As per the 2023 transfer list, the country has a shortage of 750 specialist doctors.

Around 350 doctors are presently undergoing training overseas.

By the end of 2022, 250 specialist doctors had returned after training, but 120 of them had left the country again after fulfilling staff requirements.

There could be a shortage of as many as 1,000 specialist doctors by next year.

The Health Ministry has proposed to the Finance Ministry to offer contracts to 50 specialist doctors who have exceeded 63 years of age.
