Upcountry Tamils have launched a protest march in Hatton to demand land rights.

More than 20 organizations fighting on behalf of the community took part at its commencement on June 21.

They said a government offer of a seven-perch plot per an estate worker family was inadequate, and pointed out that the government policy was to provide a plot of at least 20 perches for the landless.

Estate Tamils live in houses without basic amenities built during the British rule.

MP V. Radhakrishnan has told parliament that they needed at least 150,000 houses and 36,158 lavatories.

Holding a media briefing on the sidelines of the protest march, activist Lalith Abeysinghe said the entire nation should tender an apology for having failed to improve the living conditions of the estate Tamils.
