A Sivam Kovil in the Wanni revered by the Wanni Hindus for more than 200 years has been vandalized.

The Adilingeswara Kovil is located atop Vedukkunari mountain at Nedunkerni in Vavuniya.

Unknown persons have damaged the Kovil and dumped one statue in a shrub jungle, while three more have gone missing.

Its caretakers have complained to the Human Rights Commission office in Vavuniya on March 27 and are planning to go to the police too.

The Archaeology Department has claimed custody of the place and advised people against visiting it.

But, Hindus make offerings at the Kovil every Friday after informing the police.

A court case is on against the Kovil caretakers over alleged damage caused to a place of archaeological importance.

Buddhists dispute the Tamils’ claim, saying a temple had existed there in the past.
