Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) faces either blacklisting or suspension by the ICC due to continuing political interventions in its affairs, cricket sources said.
The most recent case in point is the world cricket governing body having come to know that the sports minister had violated an undertaking given to the court of appeal with regard to the formulation of new sports laws.
Minister Roshan Ranasinghe on August 30 last year informed the attorney general in writing that the assistance and expert advice of the ICC’s technical committee would be obtained in the drafting of a new constitution for SLC.
“I will also seek the guidance and expert advice of the ICC, as it has indeed provided, in respect of the constitutions of other cricket bodies, internationally,” he wrote.
However, the ICC is looking into his not having either obtained advice or informed it of the political interferences that had taken place since.
With those interventions likely to be proven, the SLC is on the verge of some form of suspension, said the sources.
No need to play by their rules - Arjuna
Meanwhile, former Sri Lanka skipper and Chairman of National Sports Council Arjuna Ranatunga said yesterday (1) that there is no need for this country to play as required by the international sporting federations and all sports should adhere to the country's sports law.
Addressing a press briefing, he further said, “We don't have to play the way international associations want. These new regulations are prepared in accordance with international organisations and the law of the country. This shows that some associations were deliberately banned upon their request in order to safeguard their positions. Because some of these union officials do not allow us to work directly with the international bodies of any of these federations."
