Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has countered claims that the Constitutional Council (CC) is part of the executive, by insisting that the council is not a puppet of the president.
The CC and its members take cultured and wise decisions by considering cheques and balances, Premadasa said.
He was speaking after the handover of a smart classroom to Asafa Central College in Madurapura.
The very purpose of appointing a CC was to prevent the executive president from taking one-sided decisions, he noted.
The CC will not be influenced by the executive or any other institution, he stressed.
Speaking further, the opposition leader said he would fully support the judiciary to function as per the constitution and free of intimidations by the executive or the legislature.
