Speculation is rife that a state minister from Gampaha has wagered a Rs. five million bet on the night of 04 September that Dayasiri Jayasekara would be removed from the SLFP’s
general secretary position on the following day.
A minister from Uva has made the revelation to several MPs at their restroom at the parliamentary complex.
The other party to the bet has lost, he also said.
This is said to be the highest bet placed on the removal of a party office-bearer.
Jayasekara has admitted in an interview with ‘Irida Mawbima’ that a MP who has left the SLFP to join the government has placed a Rs. 50 bet on the day prior to his removal.
Appointed the general secretary in 2019, he was removed even from the SLFP membership with immediate effect by its chairman as per powers vested in him by the party constitution.
It is alleged that Amaraweera and Lanza were part of the plot for his removal.
