The Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has paid special attention to the improper use of the doctor and professor titles given to certain individuals by various institutions.

It was among the matters that came up when the University Grants Commission (UGC) was summoned before the COPE on April 28.

UGC chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunga pointed out that there is no legal provision for the commission to take action on this.

The COPE emphasized that the UGC should intervene in this matter, as the titles of doctor and professor are being undermined.

The UGC has been instructed to present the legal changes required to be made within a month.

It was also decided to summon the UGC again in two months’ time to review the progress of implementing this and other recommendations.
