The government’s stand on whether to hold the local government polls as scheduled will be made known on February 08 following a meeting on that day of the government parliamentary group, prime minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.

He was responding to a question raised by SLPP national organizer Basil at a meeting also attended by Namal Rajapaksa and Sagara Kariyawasam at the party head office on February 01, ‘Irida Mawbima’ reported.

Rajapaksa said that although the Election Commission and the judiciary has the final say on holding the LG polls, the government’s stand too needs to be known.

He has ruled out mediating in the matter despite requests by certain SLPP district organizers to get the election postponed further.

The SLPP has made arrangements to launch electioneering from Gampaha and Kurunegala and conclude the campaign within a week.
