The drug menace that affects the entire country will be curbed by one way or another, said public security minister Tiran Alles.

The president has advised him to take any measure towards that end with the focus this year on that, Alles told the media yesterday (27).

The minister said that his personal opinion was crimes such as drugs, rapes and murders should be punished by implementing the death penalty.

He warned drug racketeers and the underworld of obliteration if they did not halt their activities.

Seeking the public’s support in this regard, he said the police hotline 118 remains open for them to provide information.

Answering a question, the minister said a disciplinary inquiry would take place against DIG Nilantha Jayawardena in connection with the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

When asked if there were moves to appoint DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon as the IGP, Alles said the incumbent was still in service.
