Workers have taken to the streets in protest against the continuing curtailment of their rights.

One such agitation took place on October 26 near the main entrance to the free trade zone in Katunayake.

Secretary of the Free Trade Zone Employees Union Lalith Karunatilake said their rights were yet to be restored after being cut during the coronavirus pandemic.

They get paid half their salaries, overtime and attendance allowances are cut and jobs lost after being included in the essential service category.

All these are continuing in the guise of an economic crisis and employers refuse to share their profits with the workers, he said.

Especially those recruited through manpower services are severely hit as some companies do not even pay the Rs. 10,000 relief allowance they had fought for and won.
