Fundamental rights petitions are to be filed tomorrow (25) against the arrest and detention of three student activists under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), according to their lawyers.

Lawyer Nuwan Bopage said they expected some form of relief from the court for IUSF convener Wasantha Mudalige and the two others.

It was unreasonable to use the PTA to arrest supporters of the Galle Face struggle, Bopage said.

Meanwhile, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka advises against the use of the PTA to arrest protestors.

The Collective of People’s Organisations too, questions the government’s use of the act against unarmed, nonviolent protestors.

At a media briefing in Colombo yesterday (23), it warned of yet another massive people’s struggle, if president Ranil Wickremesinghe did not halt his repressive action immediately.
