The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday arrested Health Ministry Additional Secretary Dr. Saman Ratnayake over the alleged procurement of substandard immunoglobulin vials.

Rathnayake arrived at the CID yesterday noon to record a statement over the purchase of controversial immunoglobulin vials. The CID had notified Dr. Ratnayake to appear before the CID for several times.

Maligakanda Magistrate Lochana Abeywickrama Weerasinghe stated that Health Ministry Additional Secretary Saman Ratnayake can be arrested by the CID without a warrant, if the suspicion is proved by the investigators, when the case was taken up before Court on Thursday.

It was transpired in Court on Thursday that Dr. Ratnayake had evaded the CID citing various reasons despite repeated requests.

Seven suspects including former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella who were arrested in connection with the purchase of substandard immunoglobulin vials were further remanded till March 14 on the orders of the Maligakanda Magistrate on Thursday.

A Fundamental Rights Application was filed in Supreme Court on Thursday on behalf of former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, challenging his arrest by the CID and demanding a compensation of Rs.100 million.
