The incumbent president is attempting to use the loopholes in the constitution to remain in his position further, charged NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is without any public mandate and backed only by a parliamentary majority, is involved in a very ugly conspiracy for power, Dissanayake charged.
He assured to the people to defeat all attempts by Wickremesinghe to remain as the president.
Dissanayake was speaking at a convention of veterinary and livestock professionals.
He also said the economic crisis has only an economic, not political, solution.
That economic solution is possible through a new political culture only, he said, adding the NPP is largely entrusted with bringing about that transformation.
