Two human rights activists today (03) complained to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate if there are racist intentions behind a campaign by certain media against singer Umara Sinhawansa over her rendition of the national anthem at the inaugural ceremony of IPL 2023.
Complainants Senaka Perera and Prasanga Fernando expressed fears there is a motive in these attempts to create racial unrest in the country again.
A written complaint by them said certain media, in intentional racist attempts, was highlighting that Sinhawansa had distorted the national anthem.
They are pointing to the singer’s Indonesian ancestry to support their allegation, said the complaint.
Later, Fernando told the media that there was a group with petty intentions to achieve its objectives by inciting racism.
