The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) has accused the government of lying over its claim that a broadcasting regulatory commission bill has not been drafted.

Its education secretary Pubudu Jayagoda told the media yesterday (04) the draft has been prepared by a ministerial subcommittee.

However, social media handles of the government say responsibility cannot be taken over a document in circulation in this regard.

Media ministry secretary Anusha Pelpita in a letter dated August 16, 2022 named members to a committee to formulate a broadcasting regulatory commission bill, said Jayagoda.

Without giving adequate time to that committee, the cabinet on September 22 appointed the subcommittee headed by the justice minister to make the draft, he said.

On May 26, 2023, the media secretary said the draft has been finalized, Jayagoda said, adding the government cannot evade responsibility now.

He urged the government to abandon the proposed law, which apparently violates freedom of expression.
