The government is planning to hold snap presidential polls early next year, said political sources.
In a possible preparation for an election, president Ranil Wickremesinghe summoned ministers, leaders of government affiliate parties and SLPP district leaders to the Presidential Secretariat last Monday, said a senior minister.
The president told them the economic growth has now improved to zero from a negative outlook and could be brought to a positive level by September.
He urged ministers and SLPP leaders to go to the people and explain the success of the government programme.
Groundwork should be laid at the village level to face any election, he also told them.
