A Tamil MP has criticized the Sri Lanka Navy over its failure to prevent Indian fishing trawlers from poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
Although the last budget allocated 20 percent for national security, the Navy has failed to prevent invasions by boats from another country, charged TNPF leader Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam.
He was speaking at a meeting of the Jaffna district development committee, chaired by fisheries minister Douglas Devananda.
The MP said he would raise the matter in parliament as well.
SLFP MP Angajan Ramanathan said the Navy should explain if it is without adequate manpower to prevent the Indian poaching.
It is both a threat to national security and a grave harm to the livelihood of Sri Lankan fishermen, he said.
