The Army has promised to abandon a plan to build a Buddhist temple at Uliyankulam in Mannar, said MP Charles Nirmalanathan.
The Tamil parliamentarian visited the location on May 22 and through the media, publicized proof of the plan, which included the planting of a Bo tree and placing a Buddha statue.
The MP claimed the commander of the 542 brigade thereafter spoke to him and promised to abandon it.
Not even 50 Buddhist families live in Mannar although Buddhist temples are already located at Madhu, Murugan, Tiruketheeswaran, South Bar and Talaimannar, he said.
