Certain privileges extended to parliamentarians such as the opportunity to arrive without inspection from the VIP terminals of the airport should be removed, agriculture minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Noting that he has no issue if such privileges are extended to foreign state visitors as well as for positions like president and prime minister, Amaraweera said that parliamentarians should use the same terminals that are used by ordinary people.

The minister further said that he would extend his support if a proposal is brought to abolish Ali Sabri Raheem's position as a Member of Parliament.

High-tech scanners at BIA

Meanwhile, Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake has instructed the Director General of Sri Lanka Customs to take all required measures to establish high-tech scanning machines at the VIP passenger terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.

The relevant directive was given by Ekanayake on the orders of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a bid to prevent illegal goods smuggled into the country via the VIP terminal.
