The government is planning a constitutional amendment that will allow the incumbent to call a prompt presidential election.

According to existing provisions, an elected president has the discretion to do so after completing four years of the term.

Constitutional experts are of the opinion that an appointed successor president does not have that entitlement.

Therefore, the aim of the amendment which is now under discussion will be to allow incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe to call a presidential election when Gotabaya Rajapaksa would have completed four years of his term.
