President Ranil Wickremesinghe agreed to postpone a House debate on the proposed Central Bank Act, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa told parliament today (09).

Premadasa said he telephoned the president earlier in the day and asked him for a postponement to allow for a compromise on the bill.

Agreeing with him, the president asked him to inform the House about the decision, said the opposition leader.

MP Gevindu Kumaratunga found fault with a government attempt to get the bill passed following a daylong debate even though the finance committee is yet to discuss amendments after the Supreme Court found 46 of its clauses inconsistent with the constitution.

He said the prime minister agreed not to debate it on a request by the opposition.
