The University Grants Commission will take legal action against the guarantors to recover expenses borne on university lecturers who had failed to return from higher education overseas, said UGC chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunga.

Presently, they total 617 lecturers, including five former vice chancellors.

He said 84 of them have agreed to pay back the money in monthly instalments.

The Committee On Public Enterprises (COPE) has been informed that the outstanding dues altogether is Rs. 2,000 million.

Prof. Amaratunga said in the future, expenses will be recovered from the ETF of the errant lecturers without giving notice.
