Media minister Bandula Gunawardena has questioned the procedure to issue licenses for television and radio channels.

Speaking in parliament today (27), he said there have been serious discrepancies in issuing the licenses.

He was responding to a question raised by SJB’s Gayantha Karunatilleke.

The minister said a new electronic broadcasting authority bill will be introduced soon to rectify this.

A cabinet subcommittee headed by justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe is nearing completion of the task.

According to Gunawardena, the country has 25 TV channels and 51 radio channels.

Minister Rajapakshe said a dialogue will be initiated with media institutions within a fortnight before preparing the final draft.
