US ambassador in Colombo Julie Chung has expressed her disappointment over allegations levelled against her country by NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa through a book launched by him.

Taking to Twitter, Chung deemed the allegations ‘baseless’ and accused the MP of spreading “outright lies in a book that should be labelled ‘fiction’”.

“For 75 years, the US and Sri Lanka have shared commitments to democracy, sovereignty and prosperity – a partnership and future we continue to build together”, she said.

She vehemently denied all allegations made by him.

Ambassador Chung’s tweet is in reference to Weerawasana’s book titled “Nine: The Hidden Story”, in which he claimed both India and the US had wanted Ranil Wickremesinghe removed as prime minister after Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from presidency.

The NFF leader also charged that failed attempts were made by the US ambassador in Colombo and a religious leader, together with an opposition MP, to get speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to take over the country.
