People living in Delft Island in Jaffna have staged a protest over the safety of their lives following the murder of five elderly persons there.

Three men and two women were found killed inside a house near a jetty, and a 51-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion.

Police said the suspect, S. Ragunathan, is a resident of Germany.

Yesterday (24), residents of the island protested peacefully in front of the divisional secretariat and handed over a letter containing six demands to the divisional secretary.

They want the police to set up observation committees and patrol the island regularly to ensure their safety and call for the installation of CCTV cameras at key locations.

Police should obtain details of outsiders in temporary accommodation and modern technology used to record movements of all persons, they also said.
