A catholic priest and human rights activist in the Wanni, who has died in a claymore attack blamed on the military, has been remembered on his 15th death anniversary.

A mass took place at Vavunikulam church on April 20 in memory of Fr. Mariampillai Xavier Karunaratnam, aka Fr. Kili.

It was presided by Jaffna bishop Fr. Dr. Justin Gnanapragasam.

Catholic priests from Colombo, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Mannar, Batticaloa and Trincomalee were in attendance.

A tree planting near Fr. Karunaratnam’s statue at the church premises also took place.

Fr. Karunaratnam, of Mallavi diocese in Mullaitivu, was also the head of the north east secretariat on human rights.

He was killed after his motorcycle was caught up in a claymore blast on April 20, 2008.
