Hundreds of fishermen staged a protest on April 17 in front of the Gotabaya Navy camp in Mullaitivu over illegal fishing practices in their waters.

They demanded the Navy’s intervention to stop it as per a government order.

Around 5,000 fisher families are getting affected due to uses of light course and other banned fishing nets in Mullaitivu seas.

When a Navy officer came to them and tried to justify the Navy, fishermen argued with them, and demanded they acted as per an order given by the fisheries minister several months ago.

They also handed over a letter containing their demands to the commanding officers in the eastern naval command.

Protestors dispersed after promises were given to resolve their issue.
