Several weeks of speculation over the post of IGP has ended with the president deciding to grant a three month extension for incumbent C.D. Wickramaratne, Presidential Secretariat sources said.

At the same time, president Ranil Wickremesinghe has promised senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon that he would thereafter be appointed as the IGP.

The president arrived at these decisions at a meeting this afternoon (24) attended by public security minister Tiran Alles, secretary to the president Saman Ekanayake, and both IGP Wickramaratne and DIG Tennakoon.

‘The Leader’ reported this morning that the incumbent police chief is to be given a service extension after he retires tomorrow.
