Certain media is on a campaign against senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon after speculation that he is to be appointed the next police chief.
Social media is now sharing a letter sent by incumbent IGP C.D. Wickramaratne to the secretary to the public security ministry.
It relates to the finding of more than Rs. 17.8 million by anti-government protestors from President’s House on July 07 last year and the DIG’s order to the Fort OIC not to investigate it.
Following a court order, the SIU investigated the matter and two weeks ago reported to the IGP via report no. SIU/340/2022, which makes Tennakoon the first accused.
Mainstream media has reported the president has recommended Tennakoon to be the 36th police chief once the incumbent retires on March 25.
Meanwhile, Wickramaratne has asked the public security ministry secretary in writing to provide him with two official vehicles for six months and allow him to remain in his official quarters for a further month.
Wickramaratne has also said he did not want a parade and other farewell functions in view of the country’s financial crisis.
