Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon is likely to succeed IGP C.D. Wickramaratne who is due to retire on March 26, according to government sources.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to recommend Tennakoon as the 36th police chief in writing to the Constitutional Council today (17).

Meanwhile, certain media claimed a one-year extension for the incumbent Wickramaratne is being considered.

Neth News reported his pensions file is yet to be sent by the police welfare division to the Department of Pensions.

However, legal experts say officers appointed by the CC cannot apply for an extension once reaching the retirement age of 60 years.
