With incumbent IGP C.D. Wickremaratne set to retire on March 26, his successor has become a hot topic now.
Wickremaratne has already sent his retirement letter to the secretary to the ministry of public security.
There is talk that president Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to grant him an extension.
However, experts say public servants appointed by the Constitutional Council cannot expect a service extension upon completing 60 years of age.
Several senior DIGs are vying for the position and they are presently involved in a campaign to vilify their opponents.
President’s counsel U.R. de Silva has explained the procedure of appointing a police chief as per the constitution.
An extension for the incumbent is unlikely, he said.
