A teachers’ trade union warns of major action if the government fails to grant teacher postings to pass-outs of colleges of education.

Vice president of the Sri Lanka Government Teachers Union Jeevaraja Rubesan told the media the education minister promised appointments by March 27 for students who concluded their teacher training last year.

Now, there is talk that appointments are getting delayed due to a delay in examination results, he said.

Despite an election being called, the Election Commission has permitted teacher appointments, said Rubesan.

Their immediate appointment will help address the shortage of teachers in schools due to many having retired following the change in the age of retirement, he said further.
