The government has defaulted on a payback of Rs. 47,650 million it had obtained from Samurdhi funds, according to the National Audit Office.

The money had been obtained between 2004 and 2021 with Treasury agreement for affairs of the government, it said in a report.

The funds belong to funds contributed to by Samurdhi beneficiaries with their allowances and mandatory savings.

In the meantime, the government spent Rs. 337,640 million from 2013 to 2021 towards paying for the beneficiaries.
