Tamil politicians have joined in to condemn the police crackdown on the anti-government protest by the NPP over the postponement of the local government polls.

The water cannon and teargas attacks left 28 in hospital, with one of them, Nimal Amarasiri of Nivitigala, succumbing to the injuries.

Ajith Gamage, a 46-year-old from Kesbewa, remains in critical condition.

In a tweet, TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran extended heartfelt condolences to the family and the NPP comrades.

“We unreservedly condemn the violence that was unleashed on the protestors yesterday,” he said.

TNPF leader Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam too, unreservedly condemned “the violence meted out on the NPP nonviolent pro-democracy protestors by the rogue government of Ranil Wickremesinghe and his SLPP accomplices through the police.”

Wickremesinghe was “rejected by the Tamils way back in 2005 for good reason,” he said.
