The Sri Lanka Digital Citizens Association (SLDCA) has called for digital voting to be in place for a significant reduction in costs and to minimize the number of election staff required.
SLDCA convener Amanda Ranasinghe told the media yesterday (21) that digitizing the voting should be viewed as an investment, rather than a cost.
Such a voting system has to be introduced without thinking of political advantages or disadvantages, if democracy and the people’s supremacy are to prevail, he said.
India introduced a mobile-based e-voting system in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic for senior citizens, people with physical disabilities, and those working in remote areas.
It was a pilot project, and it was successful, he said.
At the same time, electronic voting since 1989 is preventing crowding at polling stations.
Namibia, Nepal and Estonia have followed suit for successful results, Ranasinghe added.
