Israel has given an assurance to labour and foreign employment minister Manusha Nanayakkara to recruit 2,000 female caregivers from Sri Lanka this year.

A visiting delegation led by director of Israel’s Population and Migration Institute Shiely Raisin Sason has noted that women have more opportunities for patient care in his country.

Since opportunities for male caregivers are very limited, the delegation requested that priority be given to females when providing caregiver training.

When the importance of accelerating the recruitment process was highlighted, the minister assured the delegation that only those who meet the relevant qualifications will be recruited for training.

Those with English language proficiency and professional training will always get job opportunities in Israel, the delegation stressed.

Both parties pointed out the importance of recruiting workers through a transparent process.

Nanayakkara charged that certain private recruiters are acting like a mafia in the process of recruiting caregivers.

He requested Israel to open up opportunities to hire caregivers for jobs in Israel by the private sector as well.

Responding, the delegation said that recruiting caregivers should be carried out through the Foreign Employment Bureau only.
