The president is concerned by a Colombo-based foreign ambassador’s interference in the judiciary with regard to the local government polls, said government sources.

This top diplomat has addressed local legal experts and unduly influenced them with regard to the election, claimed the sources.

With postal voting for the LG polls postponed indefinitely, opposition parties are alleging a government conspiracy to prevent the election from taking place.

Election authorities are making efforts to hold the election on March 09 as scheduled.

Executive director of the Institute on Democratic Reforms and Election Studies Manjula Gajanayake said the law provides for the fixing of another date for the election 21 days after the due date.

Parties in the opposition have warned of legal action against officials for aiding in attempts to put off the election.

Meanwhile, ruling SLPP MP Kokila Harshani Gunawardena told the media yesterday (15) that they stand prepared to face the LG polls.

She claimed her party’s victory at the election was certain with support of the grassroots voters.
