The appointment of new members to the election and other independent commissions is due to begin today (15), according to parliament sources.

Applications close today for qualified persons to apply for membership in these commissions after the process started on January 25.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena ruled out an extension of the deadline, and noted appointments had already been delayed.

So far, more than 100 applications have been received by parliament.

Members have to be appointed to the independent commissions on state services, police, audit services, human rights, bribery or corruption, finance, delimitation and procurement.

Meanwhile, several retired deputy election commissioners are to be appointed to serve in the Election Commission, highly placed government sources said.

The government and its members in the Constitutional Council have paid the matter top attention after several quarters stressed the importance of having veteran officials in the commission.
