The Finance Ministry is yet to respond to a request for funding to hold the local government polls due on March 09, said the Election Commission.

The EC has written to the ministry secretary with regard to a Rs. 770 million requirement this month to make arrangements for the election.

Its commissioner general Saman Sri Ratnayake has submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court seeking an order to the relevant parties to provide funding and other facilities to hold the LG polls.

Speaking to Neth News, EC chairman Nimal Punchihewa said they have received only around Rs. 100 million so far.

Arrangements to hold the election will continue until a court ruling on a related case is given, he added.
