The English place name Slave Island is to be changed to Kompanna Vidiya to be used uniformly in all three languages on a directive by the prime minister.
Secretary to the prime minister Anura Dissanayake has instructed the public administration ministry secretary to take measures for this name change.
This will coincide with the 75th Independence Day anniversary.
Part of Colombo came to be known as Slave Island during colonial rule.
