State minister of finance Shehan Semasinghe accuses opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe of using the financial crisis to achieve his political objectives.

The political agenda of Premadasa and the opposition is damaging to the country, Semasinghe says in a statement in response to a remark made by the former at a SJB rally in Matugama on January 30.

The opposition leader said a future government by his party is not obliged to support deals with the IMF.

“We tell one thing to the IMF and the international financial institutions. A SJB government is not obligated to support any deal by a government like this with a president without a mandate,” he said.

Semasinghe questions Premadasa’s plan on how to ease the pain and pressure on the people from the economic collapse if the planned reforms are not taken forward.

The IMF has not laid down any conditions, and the government is introducing the reforms to ease the burden on the economy only, he claims.

If the opposition leader has a plan to stabilize the country along with a strong economy, he should present it to the people at the election platform at least, Semasinghe urges.
