Returning officers have found issues with a number of nominations handed in for the local government polls.

In Colombo, only the nominations for Homagama and Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabhas were found to be without any issue, said the district’s deputy election commissioner Mapa Bandara.

With the nominations having closed at noon yesterday (21), election officials announced the rejections following a 90-minute period given to file objections.

Nawa Lanka Nidahas Pakshaya had its nominations for Colombo and Moratuwa municipal councils rejected.

The SLPP that placed deposits for Colombo and Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia MCs and Kolonnawa urban council did not hand in nominations.

So did the SLFP for the Kaduwela MC, said Mapa Bandara.

In Matara, nominations for Thanamalwila PS by the Freedom People’s Alliance were not accepted, while the SLFP had its nominations rejected for Bope, Poddala and Akmeemana Radeshiya Sabhas.

An independent candidate’s nomination for Ukuwela PS in Matale was rejected on the ground that it did not contain the seal and the signature of a lawyer of a JP.

Rejections were also reported from Kandy (two), Ratnapura (six), Kalutara (13) and Hambantota (two).

In Gampaha district which has 19 LG bodies, seven nominations were not accepted, said returning officer Saman Padikorale.

Nominations by several parties and independent groups were also rejected for Negombo MC, Biyagama and Dompe Pradeshiya Sabhas, Minuwangoda and Wattala-Mabola Urban Councils.
