The available coal stocks will be used up by January 02 and a lengthy power cut predicted by CEB engineers will be unavoidable thereafter without a new shipment, cautions Public Utilities Commission chairman Janaka Ratnayake.

The Norochcholai power plant that needs 7,500 metric tons per day had 100,000 MT left by December 21, he said.

An ordered shipment completes unloading today (25) at Maputo in Mozambique and arrives in Colombo in 13 days’ time, said Ratnayake.

Unloading will take up another five days, he said, noting that generation at Norochcholai will come to a halt without coal and long power cuts are the only option left.
