Dual citizens no longer can hold parliamentary seats following the passage of the 22nd amendment to the constitution, says MP Patali Champika Ranawaka.

Therefore, 10 MPs in the present parliament with citizenship of another country should resign with dignity, he said at a media briefing.

This will also be an opportunity to consider for dual citizens holding top government positions, said Ranawaka.

Holding dual citizenship will not come in the way of anyone to bring foreign investments, develop businesses or to extend technical expertise, he said.

However, such a person should not be allowed to hold office to exercise sovereign powers of the people, the MP stressed.
